What to Eat After Bali Belly โ€”
The Clinical Guide

What you eat after Bali Belly can extend or shorten your recovery by 1โ€“3 days. BGC's licensed doctors explain the evidence-based recovery diet โ€” and the common foods that most travellers eat too early, making everything worse.

๐Ÿ“ฒ Book IV Treatment + Recovery Guide
Phase 1: First 24 Hours

Immediately After IV Treatment

For the first 24 hours after IV therapy, your gut lining is inflamed and has reduced absorptive capacity. The goal is to rest the gut while maintaining hydration. Oral intake should be minimal and gentle โ€” even if you feel much better after the drip.
โœ… Eat & Drink โ€” Phase 1
Clear fluids: ORS (oral rehydration salts), plain water, diluted apple juice, clear broth

BRAT diet โ€” start slowly:
๐ŸŒ Banana โ€” pectin binds loose stools, potassium replaces what's lost
๐Ÿš Plain white rice โ€” easy to digest, absorbs excess water in gut
๐ŸŽ Applesauce โ€” pectin + gentle sugars, not raw apple
๐Ÿž Plain toast โ€” white bread only, no butter or spreads

Crackers (plain saltines), plain boiled potato, plain chicken broth
โŒ Avoid โ€” Phase 1 (critical)
Dairy โ€” gut inflammation reduces lactase, causing temporary lactose intolerance

Spicy food โ€” capsaicin directly irritates inflamed gut lining

Alcohol โ€” delays gut healing, worsens dehydration

Raw vegetables & salads โ€” risk of re-infection + high fibre increases motility

Coffee โ€” stimulates gut motility, worsens diarrhea

Fatty or fried food โ€” slows gastric emptying, triggers nausea
Phase 2: Days 2โ€“3

Gentle Reintroduction

If you have no vomiting and diarrhea has reduced to 1โ€“2 episodes per day, begin gradually expanding your diet. The key word is gradual โ€” introduce one new food at a time and observe your gut response.
Plain noodles or pasta โ€” white, no sauce
Boiled chicken or fish โ€” no seasoning, no skin
Boiled eggs โ€” excellent protein without gut irritation
Steamed vegetables โ€” carrot, zucchini, well-cooked pumpkin only
Plain yogurt with live cultures โ€” probiotics support gut microbiome recovery
Ginger tea โ€” anti-nausea, anti-inflammatory, safe
Coconut water โ€” natural electrolyte replacement, gentle on gut
๐Ÿ’Š If You Were Prescribed Antibiotics
Take probiotics 2 hours after each antibiotic dose โ€” not at the same time. Lactobacillus rhamnosus or Saccharomyces boulardii reduce antibiotic-associated diarrhea by 50โ€“60%. BGC includes probiotic sachets in the take-home medication pack.
Phase 3: Days 4โ€“5

Return to Normal Eating

By day 4โ€“5, if you are stool-formed, have no fever, and feel well, you can gradually return to your normal diet. The order of reintroduction matters:
Day 4: Add cooked vegetables, legumes, soft fruits
Avocado, cooked spinach, lentils. Avoid raw salads for one more day.
Day 5: Reintroduce dairy carefully
Start with small amounts of fermented dairy (yogurt, kefir) before full dairy. Some people have temporary lactose intolerance for up to 2 weeks post-gastroenteritis.
Day 6+: Normal diet โ€” but avoid alcohol 48h after antibiotics
Alcohol interferes with Azithromycin metabolism and impairs gut healing. Wait a minimum of 48 hours after your last antibiotic dose before drinking.
Continue probiotics for 7โ€“14 days total
Gut microbiome recovery after gastroenteritis takes 2โ€“4 weeks. Probiotics significantly accelerate this. BGC's post-treatment guide includes a daily schedule.

FAQ

Recovery Diet FAQ

Can I eat nasi goreng after Bali belly? โ€บ
Not for at least 48โ€“72 hours. Nasi goreng contains egg, oil, spices, and sometimes chili โ€” all of which irritate the inflamed gut. Once you are on day 3โ€“4 and feeling well, a mild version (no chili, minimal oil) may be tolerated. Always start with plainer versions of any dish first.
Is coconut water good for Bali belly? โ€บ
Yes โ€” fresh coconut water is an excellent natural electrolyte source with potassium, sodium, and magnesium. It is gentle on the gut and well-absorbed. However, it should supplement โ€” not replace โ€” ORS, as ORS has the correct glucose-to-electrolyte ratio specifically designed for rehydration.
When can I drink alcohol after Bali belly? โ€บ
Wait a minimum of 72 hours after symptoms fully resolve, and 48 hours after completing your antibiotic course. Alcohol is dehydrating, impairs gut healing, and interacts with Azithromycin. Starting drinking too soon is the most common cause of Bali Belly relapse.
Should I take probiotics during Bali belly? โ€บ
Yes, but timing matters. Start probiotics as soon as possible โ€” but take them 2 hours apart from any antibiotic dose. Saccharomyces boulardii is particularly effective during active gastroenteritis. Continue for 7โ€“14 days after recovery to restore gut microbiome balance.
