The Basics

What Is Bali Belly?

Bali Belly is traveller's diarrhea caused by consuming contaminated food or water. It's extremely common — up to 50% of visitors experience it at some point. Culprits are usually E. coli, Salmonella, Campylobacter, Giardia, or Norovirus.

How fast does it start?
Usually 6–72 hours after eating contaminated food
How long does it last?
1–5 days untreated. With IV drip, most patients feel better within 1–2 hours
Is it dangerous?
Mostly not — but severe dehydration can be serious if untreated

What to Expect

Symptoms range from mild discomfort to complete inability to function.

Loose or watery stools (3–10× per day)Most common. Frequency tells you the severity.
